I was completely drawn in from the opening pages, and absolutely loved the author’s use of description of the different scenery and locales, and her attention to detail, especially with the characters. We feel transported not only into the various characters’ heads, but the places they are, and it was a fun escape from reality. This novel covers so, so much it’s impossible to sum up, and it was interesting to see how it all tied together but there will still be more to come. An epic literary feat, to be certain, well written and with beautiful narrative. I was really impressed and would recommend this book with the highest of praise to fans of YA adventure/action/light fantasy.

The characters were so real, and you get to feeling like you are inside their heads. This book is fast moving … it is hard to find a stopping place! Obliviously, I really enjoyed this book, and I most certainly will be looking for other books by K.N. Smith.
An interesting journey into the lives of the boys with sensory super powers. Full of action and battles, with others and their own fate. I liked this story and found it very striking. The intrigue and impeccable way the story was written gripped this reader, and I liked that I could not predict the end or knew what would happen next. The characters were young adults but anyone who loves a good action super hero-esq story would dive right into this one. Nothing like a rollercoaster adventure that keeps me turning the pages!
I have to say that it was quite a long time since a novel tickled my imagination. The book asked me to visualize every setting; the kids in their school, the football battlefield, the swaying grasses in the preserve, the devastated Sandry Lake, and the fight scenes. I am deeply hoping for the sequel!

Right from the first chapter, this tale captured my rapt attention. As each day unfolded, and the boys became deeper and deeper embedded in the fate of a neighboring city in trouble, I was on the edge of my seat, fearing not only for their safety, but their sanity as well. This story has a supernatural thread that weaves in and out, and finally ties the whole thing together to a surprising end. It’s appeal transcends the generational dynamic. The Urban Boys is a paranormal trip following a ragtag gang of young men. Each youth is thoughtful and engaging and it was a delight to read their transformative progression—from humble starts to tackling a power perhaps greater than themselves. The writer’s strength is her ability to intercut bits of nail-biting action into the character development. This cinematic book is equal parts breathtaking and meditative and I can’t wait to get my eyes on more of it. Excellent read!

What stood out to me the most about this read besides the vivid writing style, is definitely how well-constructed each of the main characters are. They all have a very complex nature and a strong foundation to each of their personalities, and as well as this, they each have their own defining flaws that contrast with their strengths – which, in turn, makes them seem quite realistic and dynamic. Overall, I am quite impressed with author K.N. Smith and hope to see more in the future.

Smith’s writing style has the confidence and delightful quirkiness of a much more seasoned pro… was a bit surprised to see this is her first novel. The characters had that elusive ‘flavor’ that only comes when they are fully realized and fleshed out, something that is not easily done, especially in a novel of this depth and complexity, and the prose was lyrical and lush… almost poetic. Beautifully mesmerizing and wonderfully addicting!

I enjoyed the book very much! The Urban Boys reads fluently, is fast paced and has a lot of likeable characters. I like the world described in the book. It seems common and everyday at first, but soon the atmosphere becomes very mystical and grows on you. Considering the beauty of the scenery and the striking fights that the boys are engaged in, I think that the story would make a thrilling show or movie!

This book is hard to put down once you start reading so block out ample time before beginning. I’ll start by saying, I definitely place this novel alongside “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games” for a couple of reasons. Although the story lines have nothing to do with one another the main characters all cater to the same age range with the door wide open for a series. While the author manages to capture every detail in every scene placing you right in the middle of your imagination, the characters are also well thought out with descriptive traits of their own. I enjoyed every minute of it and am convinced you will, too. This is undeniably an author to keep your eye on!

Oh wow, I enjoyed this book and read the whole thing in one week, which is fast for me, especially considering I have no free time at all to read these days, but it just seemed to go by so fast and I never wanted to stop reading it, even late into the evening. In this respect, the book has a strong fantasy element to it. The writer makes great use of backstories and subtext to lend depth, subtlety, and mystery to the unfolding of the story as it vacillates from surreality to reality. Additionally, the writer introduces poetic elements into the narrative, placing the story into a mythical context, each of the characters’ actions being a response to fate as they struggle to reach a balance between the demands of normalcy and the pull of destiny. Wow! This story is an explosion. It twists and turns at various intervals and send thrills all the way down my spine. These five urban boys had me at the very edge of my seat and the dreadful evil lurking around pushed me right over. The author has orchestrated a live tale that captures the imagination of readers and plunged them right in the story. I just love it!
This book was definitely hard to put down. It is a fab YA read, and is easily one that has the potential to be the next big thing in that reading community. I did find myself staying up until the wee hours of the morning, trying to see what happened next, hoping the boys were successful and that they came out of their challenges unscathed. I found the characters to be brilliant. They were very well developed, with each being given their own talents and personality. The author supplied a fantastic level of detail. There was just enough to really make things real and exciting. It is easily a book you will think about all day, both characters and story alike, wondering what will happen next and if your favourites will be ok.

I found myself just wanting to read more… and more… and more… and I couldn’t believe it when I realized I was totally hooked, and even totally enjoyed the exciting paranormal and action scenes! But seriously, I felt transported to another world just by experiencing the lives of these incredible characters who are so true to life and authentic-feeling, yet unlike any I’ve met before.
The author of this book really has a mastery of descriptive metaphors and it was quite enjoyable traversing the characters lives and families. I felt that I need more of the stories on the families and the interactions with the dark side. I would love to read a sequel with more adventures from the Urbanboys as adults. I really enjoyed the overall premise and story because there are so many ways that the boys/men’s adventures can evolve. Thank you for this thought provoking well written literary work.

Five friends do something considered taboo by the townsfolk and enter the mysterious, forest-like preserve. But something otherworldly awaits them among the trees. Yet just as the five can then sense each other, so, too, can three others sense them, and one of the trio is a killer. Smith’s book blends action and mystery with elements of the paranormal. Additionally, the novel overflows with positive thematic pointers relating to the importance of family, honesty, etc. The presence of these moments of encouragement make her story worth reading.
